The Reading Game’s Inspiring Literacy Campaign: Get A Game – Give A Game

A- A A+

To publish the 2nd edition of their award-winning learn to read program, “The Reading Game,” a San Diego based father/daughter business came up with an innovative way to raise funds for printing costs AND help children in need through a national literacy non-profit.

firstbookPartnering with First Book, the “Give the Gift of Early Literacy” campaign was launched in late October on the crowd-funding site Indiegogo.com. Through this campaign, backers can choose to GET a pre-release copy of the 2nd edition of the game for a child in their life, or GIVE a game to a child in need. The game helps children build early literacy skills and confidence in reading.

Kenneth Hodkinson, the author of The Reading Game, is also the author of the best-selling Wordly Wise series of vocabulary builders. Encompassing all grades from K through 12, Wordly Wise is the gold standard in vocabulary development and is used in over 10,000 school systems in the United States. These books have educated millions of Americans.

Working with his daughter, Erika Bird, The Reading Game was first launched two years ago. Thousands of parents and over 150 school systems now use “The Reading Game” in their classrooms and over 30 retailers stock the game in stores across the United States. “The Reading Game” is used internationally in Singapore, Bermuda, The Philippines, Korea, Australia, England, Canada, New Zealand, etc.. It’s won four awards including the Dr Toy Best Picks for Children’s Products, The Tillywig Brain Child Award, Homeschool.com’s Seal of Approval and Top Educational Gift Pick of 2011, and The Family Review Center’s Gold Award.

The Reading Game works because of a child’s familiarity with the card game memory; because of its staged learning format; and because the stories are told using only the 30 words learned through game play, which the child can read without hesitation or frustration after playing the game.

As a small, family business poised to make the jump to the next level and publish a second, enhanced edition of their game, they needed additional capital to make it happen. In making that jump, they also wanted to do good by helping build the foundations of literacy for children residing in some of the hardest economically hit regions of the country. Indiegogo.com allows projects to raise funds AND make charitable donations.

The “Give the Gift of Early Literacy Campaign” will help offset the printing costs of the 2nd edition AND donate much needed learn-to-read materials to some of the millions of children served by First Book. For every $25 pledged, First Book will receive a copy of “The Reading Game” to provide to a child in need. This $25 can be met through $1, $5 or $25 donations. When pledging at the $25 level, the backer can choose to receive their own pre-release copy of the game at $10.00 off retail or donate the game to a child in need through First Book. There are also deeply discounted retailer reward levels for wholesale purchases of the games. The campaign runs through December 4th.
